I was really excited to get a copy of
’s game, Pizza Delivery Guy against Darkness. It’s got a fun, goofy vibe and hits my Cthulhu Mythos sweet spot. The rules are clear and well laid out. The fact that it’s a D12 system means I get to spend some time with everyone’s favorite die. Today, I gave it a spin. Here’s how it went:
Pizza Guy’s guys hobbies are: cooking, parkour, and reading (especially about the Mythos). He has three useful items on hand: a mirror, a high-powered flashlight, and an air horn.
Scene One: I rolled a d12 for Where did you end up and a d12 for What is THAT?!
Where - 1) The forest on the outskirts of town, amongst the hunting lodges and creaking branches. What - 10) Giant Salamander - Amphibious, slimy, famished. It will try to eat anything smaller than it, which is, in fact, most things.
Pizza Guy falls back on his cooking hobby to prepare an enticing meal for the salamander to lure it into a lockable shed behind on of the hunting lodges. Using one of his hobbies lets me roll 2 d12s and take the highest - a 2 and a 12. He gets out of that scene and moves on.
As I played on, I found some scenes and foes hit me harder than others. Which made for a good ebb and flow of tension. I also ran into a small issue with the game. Since the Where and What charts are for a d12 and have 12 entries each, I hit a lot of rerolls. I solved this by rolling a d6 and crossing locations/things off the list, then stepping down to a d4, a d3 …
My final scene saw me with 2 pressure, at the old butchery, facing a Triclopic Mutant. I only had one item left, my trusty mirror - though I don’t see a way to use that against the Mutant. I rolled a 4, minus 2 for my pressure and ended up ruining the pizza at the very last moment.
Pizza Delivery Guy Against the Darkness is a nice little solo game that didn’t take long to play while still offering a lot of color and room to improvise some fun scenes. I’m sure I’ll be playing this again. I recommend you grab a copy to fill the odd moments when you’d like to face of against a great horror while delivering a pizza.
Thanks a lot!
